2026 Schuylkill County Training Academy Courses

All Students must pre-register for courses. No walk-ins accepted. If the minimum number of students has not been met 10 days before the start date, students will receive email notification of cancellation of the course.

There is no fee for students from member companies of the Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Association.

For Non-member or Out-of-County students there is a fee. Students must bring a check made payable Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Association on the first day of class.

Hazmat Operations Annual Refresher 2/7 at North End Pine Grove

Hazardous Materials Operations Annual Refresher – Identify Potential Hazards & Containers

FSC: 1737                                          Hours: 6.0 (Lecture: 3.0hrs / Lab: 3.0hrs)

Prerequisites: Age 16 and up, Hazardous Materials Operations

Description: Provide refresher training for first responders that respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous substances as part of the initial response for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property, and the environment. Personnel are trained to respond in a defensive fashion to contain the release from a safe distance, to keep it from spreading, and to protect exposures. They must understand basic hazard and risk assessment, how to select and use proper personnel protective equipment, basic hazardous materials terms, basic control, containment and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available, and basic decontamination procedures and termination procedures.

Out of County Cost: $71, please make checks payable to the Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Association on the first day of class.

Automatic Suppression & Detection Systems 3/23 at SCTA

Automatic Detection and Suppression Systems (AUTO)

Prerequisites: Age 16 and up

Description: This course will provide the student with information on the use and importance of automatic detection systems used in conjunction with automatic suppression systems.

Suppression systems discussed include: dry chemical, halon, carbon dioxide and foam.

Pump Operations 1 4/7 at SCTA

Pump Operations I (PUOP)

Prerequisites: Age 18 and up

Description: This course provides the fire fighter with an introduction to basic pump construction and theory as well as operating techniques. Emphasis is placed on getting water to the pump, getting water from the pump for hose streams, and prevention of common mistakes in pump operations.

Description: This course is designed to instruct the student in advanced techniques of operating fire pumps. Topics covered include friction loss, relay pumping, master streams, and elevated master streams.

Solar Panel Awareness for the Fire Service 4/22 at SCTA

Solar Panel Awareness for the Fire Service

FSC: 0381                                          Hours: 4.0 (Lecture: 4.0hrs / Lab: 0.0hrs)

Prerequisites: Age 16 and up

Description: This course is intended for Emergency Responders, as well as, other private or municipal agencies. This course is an awareness level program covering system types, code compliant installations, associated hazards, and safe work practices near solar PV systems. The course will introduce students to solar PV system operations, components, design and recommended practices.

Minimum Student Ages will be enforced. For 16 years old, your birthday must be on/before the start date of the class in 2010. For 18 years old, your birthday must be on/before the start date of the class in 2008. For example if the class start date is July 1,  your birthday would be 7/1/2010, 7/1/2008 or before.
